Tooth whitening enables everyone to regain a dazzling smile. Having white is an increasingly important advantage in social relationships. Through tooth whitening using the Zoom lamp, you can make your teeth whiter in a single session.
The teeth are made of enamel, dentin and pulp.
Enamel is the visible part of the tooth and consists of hydroxyapatite crystals. As enamel is semi-transparent, the colour of the dentin under the enamel strongly affects the colour of the tooth.
Dentin is an ivory-like substance which gives the tooth its colour. There are varying degrees of tooth whiteness from one person to another depending on the thickness of the dentin.
The dental pulp is a tissue that is rich in blood vessels and innervated, which ensures the formation of dentin as well as the nutrition, sensitivity and defence of the tooth.
Tooth whitening can treat the external causes of staining of the teeth which impact on the enamel and dentin.
The natural colour of the teeth changes over time through various colouring agents such as coffee, tea and red wine, as well as tobacco, being deposited on the teeth. When the enamel becomes fragile, it presents small cracks through which the colouring agents penetrate into the dentin more easily.
In addition, the layer of dentin thickens with age. A degradation of the colour of the teeth in the elderly thus follows.
How the session works
By examining your teeth and their colour, the dentist can assess the effectiveness of the treatment.
The Zoom lamp procedure lasts less than an hour. It is advisable to check that there are no cavities and to descale the teeth before the tooth whitening session.
The treatment starts with preparing the patient, followed by 45 minutes of whitening.
The dentist covers the lips and gums in order to leave only the teeth exposed. He then applies a whitening gel, consisting of 6% concentrated hydrogen peroxide. The light from the Zoom lamp and the gel interact to gently penetrate into the teeth and remove stains and discolouration while preserving the tooth structure.
Due to the heat from the Zoom lamp's light, low tingling can sometimes be felt immediately during and after the session, but it quickly dissipates.
The Zoom lamp removes stains from the enamel and dentin. The colour of the teeth depends on hereditary factors and you will not get a shade that is lighter than the white of the original dentin. By examining your teeth and their colour, the dentist can assess the effectiveness of the final result.
Tooth whitening is immediately visible and its duration, of between two to three years, will depend on :
- Your eating habits: If you consume a lot of coffee, tea and red wine, etc., the results will be visible for a shorter period.
- Your dental hygiene: To maintain the optimal appearance of your teeth, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day and always use dental floss.
This technique has no effect on teeth that have stains which directly affect the tooth structure because of taking antibiotics from the tetracycline family or antibiotics which contain a lot of fluoride. The only solution is to opt for the technique of dental veneers.
The crowns, veneers and fillings will not whiten but they are not affected by the treatment either.
In certain cases, to optimise the results, the dentist will recommend wearing a mouthpiece with a whitening product for several hours in the three days following the session.
