Injection products containing botox block the muscles responsible for the appearance of expression wrinkles on the face and reduce the action of the sweat glands in case of excessive hyperhidrosis.
What is botox ?
Botox is a substance derived from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. When injected into a muscle in very small doses, it temporarily causes the gradual relaxation thereof. It is an absorbable product whose effects are fully reversible after 6 months to 1 year and which is harmless to the body.
Botox was first used in ophthalmology to treat facial spasms. Patients treated with it found they had fewer wrinkles around the eye that had been treated than around the other eye. The purely aesthetic use of alleviating wrinkles was born and the demand has since grown rapidly.
In France, botox got marketing authorisation in 2003. This product was first used to reduce forehead wrinkles, frown lines and crow's feet wrinkles. It is also currently used to treat excessive sweating.
Treating expression wrinkles
Expression wrinkles originate from the movements of our face when we show our emotions. These are usually the first wrinkles that sometimes appear from the age of 30 !
- Horizontal forehead wrinkles emerge when our eyes widen in surprise.
- Crow's feet wrinkles form in the corner of the eyes when we smile or laugh.
- Frown lines between the eyebrows appear when we frown.
Botox acts at the junction of the nerve with the muscle. It blocks the chemical substance known as acetylcholine that allows the muscle to contract. Botox smooths the skin when it is injected in minute quantities. The face looks more relaxed. The wrinkles become blurred but the face remains movable. The result is therefore perfectly natural.
The result of an injection is visible from the 3rd day and is optimal after 15 days. The effect of the product lasts between 6 and 9 months.
The use of botox is often associated with hyaluronic acid injections, for comprehensive care in the treatment of wrinkles. It first relaxes the facial muscles, then fills very deep wrinkles.
Treating excessive sweating
Significant or excessive sweating is often socially handicapping because of stained clothing sweaty palms, a shiny face or smelly feet. The fear of sweating generates anxiety and anxiety causes excessive sweating. A real vicious circle sets in !
Sweating is the removal of sweat by the skin pores. Sweat is secreted through the sweat glands. Excessive sweating of the armpits, hands and feet can be treated.
To identify the areas which have the most significant amounts of sweating, the doctor first uses betadine and then, just above them, he applies a starch powder which will darken more intensely in the places where there is more sweat.
In order to avoid any pain, the doctor applies a numbing cream to the arms and hands and performs a local anaesthetic on the feet because the arch area is very sensitive.
The treatment takes effect 7 to 10 days after the injections and provides a comfort that lasts for 6 to 9 months after the first session and 1 year after the second session.
There is simple bruising and slight swelling for a few hours after a botox injection.
