Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is the most effective technique for painlessly removing hairs in a progressive and sustainable way in both men and women.

Indications

Existing devices treat all types of skin. It's only the colour of the hair that will determine whether or not laser hair removal is possible.

Only hairs that contain enough melanin can be epilated

  • Brown and black hairs are the best candidates.
  • Very light blond, bright red, grey or white hairs cannot be treated because they do not contain enough melanin.
  • Blonde hairs tending toward light brown or red hairs whose colour is similar to strawberry blonde can be treated in some cases.

Whenever hair is brown or black, all skin types can be epilated safely.

We use the GentleMax Pro from Candela which brings together two medical type IV lasers in one device :

  • Alexandrite for fair skin.
  • Nd Yag for mixed race and black skin.
  • An alternation of both devices for darker and Asian skin.

When he sets the laser power, the doctor takes into account the melanin in the hair and skin.

  • Light hairs and fair skin: High power shots.
  • Dark hairs and darker skin: Low power shots.

Because nature is normally logical, people who have dark skin usually have black hair, which provides effective results even at low power.

Specific cases

  • We do not remove hair from tanned skin, regardless of whether it is tanned due to natural tanning, UV or a self-tanning pill. The same goes for people who take photosensitizing medications or medication containing vitamin A.
  • As a precaution, we do not remove hair from pregnant women, even though there is no known risk to the baby.
  • Teenagers can use hair removal techniques from puberty. However, the number of sessions will be greater as hair renewal in teenagers is faster than in adults.

How the session works

The laser specialists are qualified doctors who receive you in the consultation and do the hair removal session.

The laser action on the hairs

The laser specifically targets melanin without damaging the skin. The melanin, this coloured pigment contained in the hair, then receives the laser beam, turns it into heat and conducts it to the hair bulb. Hair regrowth is impossible once the hair root has been destroyed.

Prior shaving of the hairs, except on the face

Before the session, the area to be epilated must be shaved, if possible three days earlier and before the emergence of the hairs is visible. Shaving also helps to avoid the unpleasant smell of burnt hair during hair removal.

Never shave the hairs on the face. Indeed, this area is generally covered with a fine down and shaving it would effectively turn this into darker and coarser hair.

A painless treatment

The doctor and patient wear protective goggles. The practitioner sweeps the treatment area with a handpiece which emits the light pulse. Our devices are fitted with an integrated cryogenic system which, simultaneously with the laser shot, sends out a very cold liquid that lessens the pain and redness. At the most, the patient experiences a very brief tingling sensation and mild heat.

There is a variable duration, number and frequency of sessions

Each laser shot covers a surface area of about 2cm² with around ten hairs. The duration of permanent hair removal sessions therefore varies according to the area being treated. As an example, a session takes 5 minutes for the space between the eyebrows, 20 minutes for the entire bikini area and up to 75 minutes for all of the legs.

It takes an average of 5 to 10 sessions to completely remove the hair from a given area. It is the face which requires the most sessions, up to ten in total.

The speed of hair regrowth is determined genetically and may vary considerably from one person to another. The duration of a hair cycle varies between 6 and 18 months. When hair growth is fast, the laser hair removal sessions should be closer together.

Average interval between 2 sessions

  • 6 weeks for the body.
  • 4 weeks for the face.

In practice, the patient can go for the next session when the hair regrowth is visible.

Between sessions, the patient can shave or apply hair removal cream. However, they must avoid waxing, electrolysis or the use of tweezers.

If the patient skips a hair removal session, the final result is simply delayed. The patient does not waste the benefit of sessions that have already been completed.

Follow-up

The patient notices simple redness for a few hours. The skin must be well moisturised. In some rare cases, there may be superficial burns which are not serious. The small scabs disappear after three to five days.

It is advisable not to expose the treated areas to sunlight during the two weeks following the final hair removal session.

Results

After each session, the regrowth is becomes slower and slower and the remaining hairs become ever finer.

To disappear completely, the hair must be touched at its roots, that is to say at the bulb. This is why the hair cannot be eliminated if it is epilated in the growth phase, because it is only then that there is contact between the bulb and the hair follicle.

About 90% of the hair will not regrow after the treatment. We then recommend an annual maintenance session to eliminate any minor regrowths.
