MiraDry is a non-invasive treatment that is authorised by the US FDA which safely destroys the sweat glands under the armpits using microwave energy.
Underarm sweat is produced by two types of sweat glands located just below the surface of the skin.
- The eccrine glands secrete a clear, odourless liquid that helps to lower the temperature of the body when it is overheated.
- The apocrine glands release a thicker liquid which gives the armpit sweat its typical smell.
When the sweat glands are activated when they should be at rest, they produce four to five times more sweat to cool the body than is needed. This hyperactivity then affects daily life and can be a great handicap. You have to change clothes several times a day and you can't wear certain colours or fabrics because rings of sweat are visible under the armpits.
The miraDry system only treats the underarm area and not other parts of the body such as the face, hands or feet.
How the session works
The miraDry device sends out microwave energy which target the armpits. The energy generates heat and destroys the sweat glands through a thermolysis effect. The technique is carried out under local anaesthetic to prevent the patient from feeling the heat on the armpit during the treatment.
Patients should shave their armpits four to six days before the session.
The doctor has several overlays of various sizes depending on the size of the armpits. These overlays will help to define the area to be treated and identify the anaesthetic points, as well as the places where he will apply the handpiece (called the bioTip) which sends out the energy.
He spreads out a thin layer of lubricant on the skin which ensures a good seal between the armpit and the bioTip.
A session lasts between 60 to 75 minutes and depends on the size of the armpits. One session is enough when the underarm sweating is normal. A second session is recommended three months later for people who suffer from excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

The armpits are a bit red and swollen and slightly painful. To alleviate the discomfort, the doctor provides ice bags that the patient places on the treated area for half an hour a day for two to three days. He also prescribes a painkiller.
It is advisable not to play sports for one week.
The heat of the miraDry eliminates 80% of the sweat glands which are located under the arms in one to two sessions. Once they have been removed, these glands do not regenerate and can therefore no longer develop.
Sweating under the arms is nearly always emotional. The loss of the glands under the armpits does not therefore affect the body's temperature regulation as they represent only 2% of the total of 4 million glands spread all over body. The body does not begin to sweat more heavily in other areas to "compensate".
After the session, the patient notices the immediate disappearance of sweat and the bad smells caused by sweat coming into contact with the skin.
