Breast surgery (or mammoplasty) encompasses all of the breast surgery procedures that aim to change the shape, size or support of the breasts.
The female chest
The breasts consists of mammary glands surrounded by fat and connective tissue. Their primary function is breastfeeding. Hormones influence the appearance and volume of the breasts throughout the woman's life :
- At puberty, the mammary gland develops and the skin stretches, giving the breasts a denser and rounder look.
- During the menstrual cycle, the mammary gland increases in volume a fortnight after the last day of the period.
- The breasts increase in size from the beginning of pregnancy. The milk ducts lengthen and branch out by into penetrating into the adipose tissue. The breasts are ready for breastfeeding in the sixth month. Once the baby has been weaned, the breasts return to their original size.
- At the menopause, the mammary gland decreases and the amount of fat increases. The skin that supports the breasts loses its elasticity, gradually causing the breasts to sag.
The size and shape of the breasts vary considerably from one woman to another. Moreover, it is often the case that one breast is slightly larger, smaller, higher or lower than the other, or that they do not quite have the same shape.
The male chest
The breasts have no role in men. Their composition is similar to that for women, but they are far less developed. For example, the mammary gland is similar to that of a woman before puberty.
Breast surgery procedures
Cosmetic surgeons must consider three important elements in order to determine the most appropriate operation for reshaping a breast: the size of the mammary gland, the amount of fat and the elasticity of the skin.
Breast enlargement surgery
Women with mammary glands which are not developed enough often feel that they are not entirely feminine. This is known as breast hypotrophy.
The solution is to perform a breast enlargement to address the lack of volume by inserting breast implants made from silicone gel or by performing breast lipofilling with the fat taken from the patient, usually at the level of the saddlebags or stomach. There are different models of implants for reshaping the outline of the breasts with a very natural result.
Breast reduction surgery
Overly developed mammary glands can be a real handicap for women (pain, difficulty dressing, complex). This is known as breast hypertrophy.
A breast reduction procedure aims to remove the excess glandular tissue and raise the breast gland.
It is not uncommon for small breasts to appear in men after a hormonal imbalance. When the volume of the mammary gland is excessive gynaecomastia is carried out to address it.
A breast operation to lift the chest
Changes in weight, a reduction of the mammary gland and skin sagging can lead to the breasts drooping to a certain degree. This is known as breast ptosis.
Breast lift surgery is carried out to lift the breasts in a symmetrical way.
Inverted nipples are not very prominent. This deformity is corrected through nipple debridement sections the milk ducts to release the nipple.
