Fue transplants remove follicular units one by one without leaving a scar on the neck and then reimplant them on the bald areas of the head, eyebrows or beard.
Redensifying the hair
For many years, Fue transplants were only for people who had very slight baldness. The constant developments have made it possible to collect a larger number of grafts. It is now possible to sample 3,000 follicular units in several sessions and thereby treat more severe baldness.
The Fue technique is also suitable for improving the results of procedures carried out with an old technique, including correcting unsightly "leek field" appearances.
However, Fue transplants are not suitable for curly hair. This is because curly hair is not straight and there is a risk that the practitioner may remove the hair without the bulb, which will prevent the hair from growing back after the graft. These people must use a hair transplant by sampling from a strip on the neck. Similarly, people who have grey or white hair should have their hair coloured before a Fue transplant.
For hair, it is possible to have either a 100% manual procedure, or to resort to automated Fue with the Robogreffe.
Redensifying the hair of the beard
For men whose beard hair is so insufficiently developed that it has irregularities with holes in the beard, we can perform a Fue beard transplant which also helps to hide imperfections such as scars or harmonise the features of the lower face.
Redensifying the hair of the eyebrows
For people who suffer from scarcity or even a complete loss of hair at the eyebrow ridge, we can perform a Fue eyebrow transplant to densify the hairs at the eyebrow ridge.
How the procedure works
The Fue hair transplant is carried out under local anaesthetic as an outpatient and lasts between six to eight hours.
Fue hair transplant with or without shaving
As a general rule, the surgeon shaves the donor area completely prior to sampling the follicular units.
For women, it is possible to do a Fue without shaving. In this case, the sampling is done in small areas covered by the surrounding hairs.
The practitioner removes the follicular units with a punch, a very fine instrument which keeps the hair bulb on the neck and temples. There are still small orifices of less than one millimetre in diameter which heal by leaving small white points which are almost invisible.
The manual extraction preserves the stem cells located beneath the hair bulb. The donor area regenerates and can be used for future sessions.
As the procedure is entirely manual, the sampling time is much longer than with the test strip method and the number of grafts sampled is lower.
Preparing the grafts
The assistants check the quality of the grafts, which contain one to four hairs. They are then kept in a storage bath which is made of physiological saline solution.
The surgeon marks the areas to be treated. This drawing serves as a reference throughout the procedure. The implantation is carried out using a needle, which makes it possible to make a micro-slit while introducing the graft at the same time.
The Fue hair transplant can be combined with platelet rich plasma injections (PRP). They improve the chances of survival of the graft implanted on the bald area.
After the procedure
On the implantation area, there remains a multitude of scars in the form of tiny dots. These tiny lesions heal completely in less than two days. The scabs in the grafts will drop off after two weeks. The patient can use shampoo the next day. The patient go return to work and play sports again immediately.
The hair grows back by the fourth month and the result is visible from the sixth month to be final after one year. With the current Fue technique, up to 3,000 grafts can be distributed in two sessions.
There is no visible scarring. The patient can therefore have very short hair even after the procedure.
